Southern Outdoor Design transformed an Atlanta couple’s formerly un-landscaped backyard from a Kudzu and weed-covered jungle into an entertaining area for adults and playground for kids.

Site Preparation
Clear Kudzu & Weeds
Remove common Georgia pest plants including Kudzu, Poison Ivy & Sumac, thorns, and various weeds.
Hill Excavation
Special care had to be taken to maintain proper “flow” down the hill from house to outdoor area.
Drainage Install & Adjustment
With the installation of new steps, the home’s existing gutter drainage needs to be rerouted to a new French drain.
Identify Native Hardwoods
This was a blending of existing (hidden) natural beauty, so all desired trees were preserved.
Retaining Wall Install
Grade of site required “switchback” install and clients desired additional landings cut-in for future patio area.
Waste Removal
Tons of bio matter had to be removed without damaging existing landscaping or disturbing residents or neighbors.
Softscaping
Tree Installation
A mix of flowering and Fall color hardwoods including Dogwoods and a Maple.
Flower & Shrub Installation
Smaller plants were installed for seasonal color and as a natural deterrent to insects: Hyacinths, Azaleas, Snap Dragons, Barberry Bushes, & Citronella Grass.
Functional
Stairs
Materials designed to withstand humidity and insects were chosen and installed for the family to safely reach the site.
Lighting
Cafe lighting was run through the length of the stair for both night-time safety and the right firepit experience.
Firewood Shed
A combo firewood and tool shed was erected with wood construction topped with a tin roof.
Aesthetic Handrails
“Tug of War” Polypro rope threaded through 8 inch posts was used for both a “rustic” feel and long life install.
Dog-Proof Fencing
The entire area was surrounded with wire fence to keep the family dog within the property without a leash.
Adult World
Flagstone Firepit
A circular, custom firepit was created for cocktails and entertaining family and friends.
Room for More
With a desire to eventually add a patio and perhaps more gardening area, landscaped pads were included.
Adirondack Seating
In keeping with the rustic feel, the family chose Adirondacks for their aesthetic appeal and low, leaned-back feel.
Kid World
Playground Base
5 cubic yards of playground mulch were laid down on top of weed guard to create a long-lasting run & play area.
Kids’ Garden
The family wanted the kids to learn horticulture so a special garden bed was installed within the playground.
Play Structure
A “Fort, Slide, & Swings” wood, metal, and plastic structure was installed with activities for both kid ages.
Adult Seating
The adults wanted a comfortable “observation platform” and went with a park-style metal bench.
The Results: Mission Accomplished
“Loggins Landing” has delighted the family and their friends for years!
Southern Outdoor Design handled the entire project from start to finish. It was SO REFRESHING not having to deal with multiple contractors.
